Jamie Nelson is my hero...

How lovely is this shoot?! I have only just discovered the amazing photographer Jamie Nelson. Where has he been all my life? I've been researching 'new' photographers for my fashion image module at uni and its actually really inspiring me! I  have so many shoot ideas whizzing around my head that I'm gonna have to put pen to paper so I don't forget any...
I can't wait for the weather to get better so I can do some shoots on location, its been so so cold today brrr.

Also I've reached 20 followers yippee :) Its been less than a month of blogging and I'm feeling positive about the future of 'Inspired by the Retired' after all the support I've been receiving, So thanks very much for all your kind comments :)

Today's outfit...

Top-  Zara
Bow-tie- Thrifted
Skirt- Primark
Tights- New Look
Boots- Dr Martens
Watch- Lorus
Firstly I would like to apologise for the crappy lighting on this photo, I was patiently waiting for a nice day to do an outfit post but obviously Preston weather is against me as it's been raining all day! So I've had to compromise and take them in my living room with the yellowy, artificial lighting boo :(

This watch was a gift from the boy for our anniversary last year, I'm not usually a watch person but I really like all the little dials and the colour of the metal. Its more of a pinky gold colour than in the picture. The only down side is that it has a white leather strap which is getting pretty grubby!

I was having a bit of a sort through my drawers and wardrobe this afternoon and I have made an e-bay and a charity shop pile! I found this bow-tie that I had completely forgotten about, I think I was going to use it for one of my styling projects? Anyway I think the pattern is pretty cute and I like wearing it as a choker rather than under a collar.

I bought these Dr Martens back in November and have worn them almost everyday! They are so comfy and warm with the shearing lining. I bought them brand new off ebay for £60 but the retail price on the Dr Martens website was £200!! They remind me of a mixture of Uggs (bleurgh) and Timberlands (double-bleurgh) but I am totally in love with them!

Also this morning I braved the disgusting weather to have a mooch round the flea market and I bought these little hooters! So cute!

Sunday

Puzzle Project!

For our current project we have to create a still life editorial which bizarrely has to be based on a jigsaw puzzle! There are other factors mentioned in the brief such as it has to be inspired by accessory/beauty/interior trends for 2011 but apart from that we are pretty much free to do as we please!
I found this puzzle in the charity shop on my road for 49p (why not 50p?-random) I love the 1950-60s housewife look and I think quite a few trends this season are inspired by that era. I haven't done a jigsaw for about 10 years! This one has 1000 pieces and the outside edges are already challenging me haha! We have 4 weeks for this project but I can imagine it will take me at least a week to even make the flippin' thing...Jigsaw and tea party anyone?
I start my fashion image module tomorrow which means that we get to collaborate with the photography students-exciting!

P.S The Polaroid effect on my photos has been made by using the fantastic Poladroid Image Maker :)

Thursday

Lazy Day!

Today was my day off from uni so I decided to have a pyjama day, wear no make-up and mooch around in my slippers! I have actually done some research for my new project (which I will explain in the next few days) so I have been on style.com looking through all of the SS/11 collections which has been very interesting.

In true chill-out style I lit my 'peace' candle which smelled lovely although it didn't burn for very long but long enough to fill my living room with a relaxing aroma!

Then I painted my nails using Nails Inc. in Victoria Gate and a GOSH top coat. I was going to upload a picture so you could see the colour but I did a really rubbish job of painting them aha so maybe another time :) Anyway the colour as you can kind of tell from the photo is a lovely plummy, berry colour which I'm really into at the moment.

And lastly to complete my lazy day I just made the most delicious hot chocolate ever! I bought the hot chocolate from TKmaxx food section just after Christmas so it was reduced to just £1. It is the nicest hot chocolate I have ever tasted and is pretty natural with the only ingredients being cocoa and sugar. It is made by a company in the USA called Burnham and Mills and comes in cute little tins that double up as money boxes when all the powder had gone! Then I add a huge spoonful of the Marshmallow Fluff which is amazing because it doesn't have gelatine in but tastes the same as regular marshmallows. I bought mine from Selfridges but I noticed last time I went into TKmaxx that they were selling it there for £1.99! They have some awesome-sounding recipes on their website which I might have a go at making soon including the 'Fluffernutter Sandwich' which is the marshmallow fluff mixed with peanut butter spread thickly into a sarnie mmm!

My hot chocolate in my Kitty cup :)

I'm going to the Trafford Centre in Manchester tomorrow evening with my friends from work so hopefully I will have some bargains to show you in my next post!

Birds, Bows and (Velvet) Bees...

Hello!
Here is yet another post of what I've been buying! My poor bank account is getting a hammering. Well not really a hammering, more like a prod because my latest buys have been super-duper bargains :)

Here is my cute little floral swan who is perched on the windowsill next to floral cat! I found her in a charity shop on my road for just 75p :) There seems to be a few gaps on my windowsill now after I accidently killed my Rose plant and all the Christmas decorations have been packed away, so much to my boy's dismay ("I like minimalist Rache, why do you have too fill every empty space...yadda yadda") it will be filled again soon.

These teacups and saucers are so adorable! After we had left the Charity shop I spotted them in the window and went back in to snap them up. I got three saucers and four cups all for £1. I've been wanting some for ages so I can use them to make candles. All I need to do now is buy the wax and hey presto-super cheap and cheerful candles :)

These tins were a little present of my mum, she bought them from the Lakeland limited sale. I'm obsessed with anything cupcakey so these are perfect! I'm not sure what I'm going to put in them yet but I know I want to have them on display somewhere.

I've been wanting a pair of loafers for a while now but had resisted buying a few times because the ones I seen were a bit bland and nothing special really. I saw these ones on Amazon and they had been reduced from £65 down to £19! The reviews were good and they looked lovely with the purple suede and brown fringing. I am always a bit dubious when buying shoes on-line though because I like to try them on first. My pet hate is wearing in uncomfortable shoes! When they arrived the packaging was so cute that I had to include it in the photos. They fit me perfectly but are a little stiff around the edges but like most leather shoes they will soften after a few wears.

I hadn't heard of Velvet Bee before. I looked on there website and they have the most beautiful designs and the attention to detail is amazing. Plus this particular pair was featured as 'The Bee's Choice'.

Saturday

I spy with my beady eye...

I'd like to introduce you all to my third-eye ring! It is completely made by hand by the lovely lady at 'MagPie in the Sky' aka my mum! This was one of my Christmas present off her, I'd said to her that I wanted an evil eye ring after seeing some pretty freaky-deaky ones on-line. My mum has been making jewellery for a few years now and is completely self-taught. She mainly uses vintage charms and findings that she collects herself at fairs and antique markets. She is busily preparing for her on-line launch which should be happening in a few months if all goes to plan. 'MagPie in the sky' also creates beautiful custom orders. If you have a vision about a unique piece of one-of-a-kind jewellery my mum can make it happen. Add her Facebook page :)

The ring itself is made from a vintage Japanese doll eye, brass and copper wiring and beads. It's in a 'Steampunk' style. For those of you who don't really know what Steampunk is I suggest that you type it into Google and have a mooch. I did and I'm a huge fan ever since :)

Good old Wikipedia's definition:
"Steampunk is a sub-genre of science fiction, alternate history, and speculative fiction that came into prominence during the 1980s and early 1990s.Specifically, steampunk involves an era or world where steam power is still widely used—usually the 19th century and often Victorian Era Britain—that incorporates prominent elements of either science fiction or fantasy. Works of steampunk often feature anachronistic technology or futuristic innovations as Victorians may have envisioned them; in other words, based on a Victorian perspective on fashion, culture, architectural style, art, etc. This technology may include such fictional machines as those found in the works of H. G Wells and Jules Verne or real technologies like the computer but developed earlier in an alternate history."

P.S please excuse my retired-looking hands! they do not like winter...

A pretty dress for the Cocktail Factory!

Why is it that when you have something specific in mind and actually have money (hello student loan!) you can never find what you are looking for! After looking round Preston town centre for about 4 hours I was ready to give up :( Then as a last resort we went into Debenhams and I spotted this little beauty in the Oasis section. I always forget about all the concession stores inside Debenhams I'm not sure why. Anyway this dress was on the sale rail for £30 reduced from £60 which in my eyes is a good bargain! I tried it on and it was a perfect fit! Last dress in my size and in the last shop-it was definitely destiny!

It was my friend's *belated* birthday night out so we decided to go to The Cocktail Factory for something a bit more special than the usual pub outing. It is expensive, with cocktails starting at £6, but they are beautifully constructed and taste so yummy (& get you way past tipsy!) The venue itself is very sophisticated (as you can see from the photos) hence the need for a 'dressy' dress.
Some images off their website of the deliciously crafted cocktails.
My friend's huge, free birthday cocktail :)          'Um Bongo' is one of my personal faves!

Here is a photo of me wearing the dress, with the lovely Rebecca (check out her blog too!)
I should be a member of this society ;)

I would like to say a big 'Thank You' to all my new followers and readers, I've only been blogging for just over a week and the support and lovely comments I've been receiving is so encouraging :)

Polka dots,leopard print and floral!

Jumper dress: Dorothy Perkins, Blouse(only collar showing): Charity shop, Belt: Charity shop, Tights: Betsey Johnson, Boots: Dr Martens, Watch: Lorus Ring: MagPie in the Sky

These were taken in my backyard, it's shared with the shoe shop that I live above so it's kinda grotty ha! I feel like I should invest in some pretty potted plants and a lovely garden bench just to cheer the place up.

I don't usually wear this many prints all at once but I felt in a 'patterny' mood today. The tights are Betsey Johnson ones that I picked up really cheap in tkmaxx so I'm praying that they will last longer than all the Topshop and ASOS tights that are costing me £8 a pop and laddering after one wear :( I need to find somewhere that does extra long, extra thick indestructible tights for a cheap price-maybe asking too much?

Flea market finds

Here are some of my favourite 'treasures' I've accumulated since September from the completely underrated Preston flea market and the charity shops on my street. Last year I pretty much ignored the second hand phenomena, I'd use eBay but I'd never been to a flea market before it just seemed too daunting. We were briefly introduced to it as part of our styling project, in groups we were given £3 to get as many props and accessories for a shoot as we possible could-bartering and all! I was amazed at how much we bought for so little money and how unique and well made some of the items were.

Now I'm hooked and I rarely buy things from the high street, I used to be a bit of a Primark addict before but I quickly realised that if there was a particularly nice item in Primark everyone would have snapped it up! Now I look for good quality items in charity shops and often pay next to nothing, plus I'm getting a cheaper and more exciting/versatile/unique wardrobe whilst helping a good cause.

My second-hand windowsill!

Authentic Russian dolls

Lamp candle, Italian leather bottle with engraved ship, golden cat

I love this little mirror it cost me just £1! The brass finish and metalwork is gorgeous. It reminds me of something you would find in an old ship.

At the moment I have a bit of a peacock obsession! This plate is hanging on my wall and I'm in love with the colours and the intricate pattern.
This is a close up of a picture I found in the charity shop, the photo really doesn't do it justice! It cost just £2 which is a bargain as I saw a similar (less shiny, smaller) version in TKmaxx selling for £35! Old antique maps and globes really fascinate me. There is a bit of information about the map on the bottom of the picture and it says this is a reproduction of a 1605 world map!

I fell in love with the little floral cream cat as soon as I saw her! She must be pretty old because the pottery has turned crackly. The company that it is made by is Bairstow Manor Pottery which I have never heard of but I'm not really a pottery expert! The cat is hollow so I want to put a cute little pot plant inside but I haven't found one small enough yet!

If your from Preston or the surrounding area I really cannot recommend the flea market enough! It is on every Tuesday and Thursday in the covered area where the normal market is held.

       My advice is:
  • Get there as early as you can, from my experience after midday the best things have usually gone and most people start to pack up after 1pm
  • Don't be afraid to haggle, just don't be cheeky about it. If something has £10 label on politely ask if they would accept any lower. If they don't want to accept just walk away, what usually happens is that the merchant will come to there senses and try and strike a deal!
  • Make friends with the stallholders that sell items that you like, I don't mean be best buddies and add them on Facebook but be friendly, ask about the items they are selling because they often have an interesting story behind them. Once you have bought from them a few times or at least had a nice chit-chat then you are more likely to get a better price. My favourite line is 'Aw seeing as it's you...(insert cheaper price)'
  • Be prepared to 'get your search on', Some of the stalls on the market are just piled high with random bits and bobs, you can't expect to see something amazing without having a proper look. Wearing gloves or keeping some hand sanitizer in your bag is probably a good idea because you never know where things have been. Unwashed clothes, dusty things that have been living in an attic or damp garage-it's not glamorous but worth it if you find something that you will love!

Alice in Wonderland...

I'm a huge fan of the Alice in wonderland story. I loved the original Disney cartoon, the Tim Burton re-make, the Syfy TV special (www.syfy.com/alice/ check it out it's amazing, a totally different twist on the story) and this sneaky little version here. I'd never seen this film before but on Boxing day as I was flicking through the Channels looking for a film to watch whilst I slobbed on the sofa and demolished a tin of quality street, this was showing on channel five. It  was made in 1999 so I was quite surprised that I'd never seen or heard about it before! Alice is played by a young Tina Majorino aka Deb from Napoleon Dynamite! Robbie Coltrane plays Tweedledum and Whoopi Goldberg is the Cheshire Cat!

Anyway seeing the film jogged my memory of all the lovely, whimsical homeware on www.anthropologie.eu . I only stumbled across the website by accident a couple of months ago but it is a brilliant accident! I personally cannot afford the majority of the items on the site but it has inspired me to keep a look out on the flea market and in charity shops for similar things. Here is a selection of the items I want in my Wonderland style dream house!

 Dream chatter Cat Tumbler- £12
This cute glass reminds me of Dinah-Alice's' kitten.
It has 'Now I can't remember any of it' etched onto the glass which is very random but also inkeeping with the Alice theme!

teacup alley wallpaper-sale price £29.95 was £58.00
This is a genius invention! It is self-adhesive wallpaper which means no messy wallpaper paste. The adorable blue and white teacup theme would look super-cute in a small area of a kitchen or dining room. Although when I say small area it would have to be at almost £30 a roll!

Keyhole hooks-sale price £11.95 was £22
These coat hooks are lovely and would actually encourage me to hang up my coats as at the moment they are living on the backs of my chairs!I really like the brass finish too :)

 Tall teapot pendant- £95
Oh how I would love to have an assortment of teapot lights dangling from my kitchen ceiling! At £95 each I don't think it would be a very thrifty thing to do with my student loan! But ooh soo prettyy...
 Laelia bedding- from £48-£128
In most of the films they always include a beautiful garden and this floral bedding is bright with intricate stitching and embroidery. I might have to find some similar fabric and get nifty with my hand sewing skills as my sewing machine is not my friend at the moment!

Tea service cookie stand- £138
This cake stand captures the essence of the mad hatter's tea party! I think with a bit of careful planning and some very strong glue(!) this would make a great DIY project and it would probably cost a fraction of the price if the teacups and saucers were bought second hand!
Monogrammed mug- £6
Again, these lovely mugs would be quite simple to customise if you made a stencil and used waterproof paint.
